Amy Lee (born December 13, 1981 in Riverside, California) is the co-founder and lead singer of Evanescence. Her family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, Rockford, Illinois, and finally stopped in Little Rock, Arkansas. Responsible for many of Evanescence’s hard hitting lyrics and is the main songwriter on the new album, The Open Door. Amy provides the image for the band and does most of the interviews. Ben Moody discovered Amy Lee’s voice in summer camp in 1994 when she performed a few lines of Meatloaf’s "I'd Do Anything For Love." After that, the rest is history. She is currently one of the most popular and sought after voices in music today.

Image
Lee has a trademark neo-goth style, marked by her use of gothic make-up and taste for Victorian-styled clothing (her favorite era of time). She dyes her hair jet black, though her hair is actually dark brown. Her eyes are green but she used to wear blue contacts (Fallen era). She also designs many of her own clothes, including those worn in the music video for Going Under and the dress she wore at the 2004 Grammy awards. After she designed it, she chose Japanese designer H. Naoto to make it for her, although she does sometimes make her own clothes. In concerts, she often wears a corset and fishnets. Amy used to have a notable piercing on her left eyebrow which she had taken out and had re-pierced a few times, but she took it out for good sometime in mid-2005.

Many fans praise Lee for her refusal to emulate other celebrities by using sex appeal in her music. She has stated on a number of occasions that she would never flash her breasts or engage in other publicity stunts that would draw attention to herself. In fact, in the music video for Everybody's Fool, she aimed to mock such artists by suggesting celebrities who use sex to appeal to an audience are, in fact, merely peddling "lies" (the unifying theme of the music video). }}

In November, he had claimed to have recovered "a good 50%" from the stroke, getting better every day. He is now touring with the band full time.

Tools of the Trade
{{quote|I use Ibanez guitars. In the studio, I kind of use a similar setup to what I used on the last Cold record I did, which is mix up the amps and combine the sound together.

Lee has a trademark neo-goth style, marked by her use of gothic make-up and taste for Victorian-styled clothing (her favorite era of time). She dyes her hair jet black, though her hair is actually dark brown. Her eyes are gray-blue but she is rumored to use blue contacts. She also designs many of her own clothes, including those worn in the music video for Going Under and the dress she wore at the 2004 Grammy awards. After she designed it, she chose Japanese designer H. In concerts, she often wears a corset and fishnets. Amy used to have a notable piercing on her left eyebrow which she had taken out and had re-pierced a few times, but she took it out for good sometime in mid-2005.

Many fans praise Lee for her refusal to emulate other celebrities by using sex appeal in her music. She has stated on a number of occasions that she would never flash her breasts or engage in other publicity stunts that would draw attention to herself. In fact, in the music video for Everybody's Fool, she aimed to mock such artists by suggesting celebrities who use sex to appeal to an audience are, in fact, merely peddling "lies" (the unifying theme of the music video). although she does sometimes make her own clothes.

<ref name=VH1>Moss, Corey.
In her personal life, she enjoys being a girl. Her clothing style is quirky and marked by her frequent use of not-so-goth clothes (she stated in an interview with AOL that she was wearing "something floral"). She explains it as a professional thing, saying that her image onstage is so different from her normal clothes because it completes the image; if she were to come out onstage in pink boots and a track suit and sing about despair, it would totally ruin the image.

Out of the Shadows
In 2005, Amy became a spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation and launched a campaign called Out of the Shadows. The goal is to help spread awareness about epilepsy and to encourage people to not discriminate against people with epilepsy. This campaign is important to Amy, as well as her family, because her younger brother has epilepsy and she has seen first hand the effect it has.

Other Appearances
In 2000, Amy sang guest vocals on David Hodges' songs 'Breathe' (The Summit Church: Summit Worship CD) and unreleased song of his called 'Fall Into You'.

She did back up vocals on Big Dismal's song 'Missing You' off of their 2003 debut release CD, Believe.

Did some vocals on the Underworld soundtrack in 2003 but after some issues with her record label her voice was never used. Her name still appears in the credits though.

Amy is featured on Seether's song Broken. The song was released as a single in 2004 and can be found on The Punisher soundtrack and on Seether's Disclaimer II album.

She appears on Korn's 2007 MTV Unplugged album on the track 'Freak On A Leash'. The song was also released as the first single.

Tools of the Trade
On tour, Amy uses a Baldwin baby grand piano with a keyboard insert; A baby grand piano shell with an electronic keyboard instead of a physical piano on the inside. She also uses a stand-alone Baldwin keyboard and Shure Microphones.
The Open Door: Track 13
Described as "a string-and-choir-infused closer distinguished as the band's first truly (almost) contented song" by Evanescence.com, the song is reminiscent of the piano ballad Give Unto Me in it's purest form.

It is decidedly upbeat and showcases an Amy Lee that is letting someone in and who sounds happily in love. She thinks it is the bravest track on the album. “It’s totally scary to be so vulnerable when I know however many metalheads are going to diss it because it’s not the exact same thing [as the other songs],” Lee says. “And it doesn’t end with, ‘And then he died’ or ‘I pushed him off a cliff’ or ‘He’s a ghost really.’ It’s so cool to me and weird to me. I’ve never written a happy song, ever.

Though the lyrics and feeling are generally happy, it is not a far cry from true Evanescence style. The first listen will have you feeling truly apathetic and moved.

The intro to this song came from a piece that Amy had written for Narnia, but was scrapped. We may never hear what originally folowed this beautiful and elaborate string/piano arrangement.

Lyrics
Under your spell again
I can't say no to you
Crave my heart and its bleeding in your hand
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you torture me so sweetly
Now I can't let go of this dream
I can't breathe but I feel

Good enough
I feel good enough for you

Drink up sweet decadence
I can't say no to you
And I've completely lost myself and I don't mind
I can't say no to you

Shouldn't have let you conquer me completely
Now I can't let go of this dream
Can't believe that I feel

Good enough
I feel good enough
It's been such a long time coming, but I feel good

And I'm still waiting for the rain to fall
Pour real life down on me
'Cause I can't hold on to anything this
Good enough
Am I good enough
For you to love me too?

From Metal Edge Magazine

The hard rocking “All That I’m Living For” focuses on the band itself. Its genesis came from a realization Lee had one say that her band was her life. “I don’t do anything else,” she says. “I’m writing for the band, touring for the band, doing an interview about the band, or thinking about the next thing I want to write. It’s my life, and I love it, but it’s a love/hate relationship.”

Lyrics
All that I'm living for
All that I'm dying for
All that I can't ignore alone at night

I can feel the night beginning
Separate me from the living
Understanding me
After all I've seen
Piecing every thought together
Find the words to make me better
If I only knew how to pull myself apart

All that I'm living for
All that I'm dying for
All that I can't ignore alone at night
All that I'm wanted for
Although I wanted more
Lock the last open door
My ghosts are gaining on me

I believe that dreams are sacred
Take my darkest fears and play them
Like a lullaby
Like a reason why
Like a play of my obsessions
Make me understand the lesson
So I'll find myself
So I wont be lost again

All that I'm living for
All that I'm dying for
All that I can't ignore alone at night
All that I'm wanted for
Although I wanted more
Lock the last open door
My ghosts are gaining on me

Guess I thought I'd have to change the world
To make you see me
To be the one
I could have run forever
But how far would I have come
Without mourning your love?

All that I'm living for
All that I'm dying for
All that I can't ignore alone at night
All that I'm wanted for
Although I wanted more
Lock the last open door
My ghosts are gaining on me

Should it hurt to love you?
Should I feel like I do?
Should I lock the last open door
My ghosts are gaining on me
The Open Door: Track 10

The guitar part by Balsamo makes this song remarkable. The piano playing and the vocals by Amy remind us of Missing. When the 7-string guitar takes over, we are a bit reminded of Korn (of which Evanescence have covered Thoughtless on Anywhere But Home). The intro features a series of strange noises that "Sound like a piece from a yodelling cartoon with ducks and old ladies."

Lyrics
When they all come crashing down-- midflight
You know you're not the only one
When they're so alone they find a back door out of life
You know you're not the only one

We're all grieving
Lost and bleeding

All our lives
We've been waiting
For someone to call our leader
All your lies
I'm not believing
Heaven shine a light down on me

So afraid to open your eyes- hypnotized
You know you're not the only one
Never understood this life
And you're right I don't deserve but you know I'm not the only one

We're all grieving
Lost and bleeding

Don't look down
Don't look into the eyes of the world beneath you
Don't look down, you'll fall down,
You'll become their sacrifice
Right or wrong
Can't hold onto the fear that I'm lost without you
If I can't feel, I'm not mine,
The Open Door: Track 8

From Metal Edge Magazine:

The most personal on The Open Door is “Like You”. “It is about something that’s hard to even talk about but feels good to write about,” explains Lee. “It’s about my sister who passed away when I was a little girl. I was six years old and she was three. It’s affected my life and definitely affected my music writing, and it’s made me who I am. It’s one of those things that happens early enough in life that it forms you. I think in a lot of ways I made it a thing that I can use in a positive way in my life. I’ve learned from it and grown up, and I’ve always felt older. Twenty-four sounds young to me, it’s weird.”
Having lost a sister at such a young age put things in perspective for Lee, who says she cherishes making music and wants to love. “What else is there?” she ponders. “I don’t care about the stupid things as much as I would if I hadn’t been through that. The song is about me from the perspective of a child back then, and I go back to that place a lot of times. I went there and wrote the song that way. It’s not the kind of thing that I would normally say on a megaphone in front of millions of people.”

“It’s something that changes you,” the singer stresses. “I love her, and I will always love her. Her spirit is always with us. I feel like I’ll always want to have a little place for her on every record. On the last record, it was ‘Hello,’ and I wrote that from the perspective of a child. I was talking about it in a little bit of a different way, but it’s the same inspiration."

Lyrics
Stay low
Soft, dark, and dreamless
Far beneath my nightmares and loneliness
I hate me
For breathing without you
I don't want to feel anymore for you

Grieving for you
I'm not grieving for you
Nothing real love can't undo
And though I may have lost my way
All paths lead straight to you

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you

Halo
Blinding wall between us
Melt away and leave us alone again
Humming, haunted somewhere out there
I believe our love can see us through in death

I long to be like you
Lie cold in the ground like you
There's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
I'm coming for you

You're not alone
No matter what they told you you're not alone
I'll be right beside you forevermore
I long to be like you
There's room inside for two and I'm not grieving for you
And as we lay in silent bliss
I know you remember me

I long to be like you, sis
Lie cold in the ground like you did
The Open Door: Track 7

The song was originally written for the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, but was scrapped by the director. "I thought it would be awesome for the opening scene, but they wanted something original," says Lee of the Mozart cover.

It features elements of W.A. Mozart's "Lacrymosa" from his 'Requiem in D Minor.' More info on that composition can be found Here.

A 22-cord orchestra led by Dave Campbell (with whom Evanescence had already worked for their performance at the Billboard Awards 2004) starts off the song in order to introduce a choir, which serves as back up for Amy’s vocals.

"Dave Campbell is an enormous inspiration source for me," says Amy. "He’s so talented. The way he arranges orchestral parts is remarkable. It's the element of our music that makes me cry!"

Terry's guitar solo in the middle of the song adds to its sheer epic sound before the choir closes with a stunning decrescendo.

Recorded in a chapel near Seattle.
A 30 second clip of this song along with The Open Door trailer was featured on music.aol.com's page for Evanescence. It can now be seen on YouTube Here.

Lyrics
Out on your own
Cold and alone again
Can this be what you really wanted, baby?

Blame it on me
Set your guilt free
Nothing can hold you back now

Now that you're gone
I feel like myself again
Grieving the things I can't repair and willing ...

To let you blame it on me
And set your guilt free
I don't want to hold you back now love

I can't change who I am

Not this time
I wont lie to keep you near me
And in this short life
There's no time to waste on giving up
My love wasn't enough

And you can blame it on me
Just set your guilt free, honey
I don't want to hold you back now love
The Open Door: Track 6
In issue 88 of "Rock Sound", Amy revealed exactly what the song is really about. She explained how the song is based on "scary experiences". She explained how many nights she was forced to stay in hotels, because a stalker was erm...stalking her. She took the title from EvBoard, as her username is "Snow White". The word "Queen" was presumabely added because of what the attention the stalker made her feel like.

...this song sounds like the narrator is almost about to be raped.

The setting of the song is so off-kilter, it basically arrests you from the first listen. It's violating. It's like the narrator is talking to the attacker, and the attacker is attempting to justify their actions in the chorus ("soon I know you'll see you're just like me."), either to the narrator or to themselves as they attempt to commit the crime.

I'm not trying to say that this song is based on a rape attempt, but the way the subject is discussed, it's very carnal ("all your hands on me/I can't scream", "undress in the dark and hide from you", "now I have you", "there's nowhere to run so let's just get it over") and there are a lot of references to the human body, in addition to a chord progression that's flat-out VIOLATING. You can't listen to this song without feeling at least a little disturbed.

Lyrics
Stoplight lock the door
Don't look back
Undress in the dark
And hide from you
All of you

You'll never know the way your words have haunted me
I can't believe you'd ask these things of me
You don't know me

You belong to me
My snow white queen
There's nowhere to run, so lets just get it over
Soon I know you'll see
You're just like me
Don't scream anymore my love, cause all I want is you

Wake up in a dream
Frozen fear
All your hands on me
I can't scream

I can't escape the twisted way you think of me
I feel you in my dreams and I don't sleep

Don't scream anymore my love, cause all I want is you

I can't save your life
Though nothing I bleed for is more tormenting
I'm losing my mind and you just stand there and stare as my world divides

Not much is known about the song just yet. An article describes it as "diving into the soundtrack of a dark movie, with Amy’s mumbling and singing that lightens us up. The very gloomy atmosphere lasts throughout the whole song. DJ Lethal’s samples once again perfectly match with the song."

If you want to live, let live
If you want to go, let go
I'm not afraid to dream- to sleep, sleep forever
I don't need to touch the sky
I just want to feel that high
And you refuse to lift me

Guess it wasn't real after all
Guess it wasn't real all along

If I fall and all is lost
The Open Door: Track 4
Lithium is a psychiatric drug used as a mood stabilizer, often prescribed to people with bipolar disorder and/or mood swings, along with other mood disorders. Described as a track "which embraces feeling over numbness," Amy has said her soured relationship with ex-boyfriend Shaun Morgan of Seether was the inspiration for the track.

Before the release of The Open Door, the song was suspected by some to be a cover of the Nirvana song which bears the same name. The song's release has proven this to be false.

The enchanting duo consisting of vocals and piano immediately reminds us of My Immortal. When the drums and guitars come in, the atmosphere becomes even more solemn. The vocals take care of emotion and consequently sadden the listener, thus reminding us of songs off Origin. This song is viewed by some as the album’s first real highlight and has definite potential as a single.

Lyrics
Lithium, don't want to lock me up inside
Lithium, don't want to forget how it feels without
Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow
Oh, but God, I want to let it go

Come to bed, don't make me sleep alone
Couldn't hide the emptiness you let it show
Never wanted it to be so cold
Just didn't drink enough to say you love me

I can't hold on to me
Wonder what's wrong with me

Oh, don't want to let it lay me down this time
Drown my will to fly
Here in the darkness I know myself
Can't break free until I let it go
Let me go

Darling, I forgive you after all
Anything is better than to be alone
And in the end I guess I had to fall
Always find my place among the ashes
The piano is the principal instrument for this song. It displays the maturity of the band’s new sound. The choir once again appears, causing the end of the song to be really epic

Lyrics
I can't see your star
I can't see your star
Though I patiently waited, bedside, for the death of today
I can't see your star
The mechanical lights of Lisbon frightened it away
And I'm alone now
Me and all I stood for
We're wandering now
All in parts in pieces, swim lonely
Find your own way out
I can't see your star
I can't see your star
How can the darkness feel so wrong?
And I'm alone now
Me and all I stood for
We're wandering now
All in parts in pieces, swim lonely
Find your own way out
So far away
It's growing colder without your love
Why can't you feel me calling your name?
Can't break the silence
It's breaking me
All my fears turn to rage

Described as a song about Amy's "plea for perspective from the expectation of young fans" by Evanescence.com.

The guitars take off whilst Amy’s voice gets lost between sampled mumbling and a guitar riff by Balsamo. The vocals get more and more synthetic whilst the guitars get mixed with an electronic supplement. A track that is very easily distinguished from Evanescence’s repertoire.

Lyrics
Feels like the weight of the world
Like God in heaven gave me a turn
Don't cling to me, I swear I can't fix you
Still in the dark, can you fix me?

Freefall, freefall, all through life

If you love me, then let go of me
I wont be held down by who I used to be
She's nothing to me

Feels like the weight of the world
Like all my screaming has gone unheard
And oh I know you don't believe in me
Safe in the dark, how can you see?

Freefall, freefall, all through life
The Open Door: Track 1

Described as a song about "a post-relationship catharsis that head-dives from an otherworldly intro into a hard-driving thrash of hard rock guitars and soaring rock vocals" by Evanescence.com.
The listener is captivated by Amy’s universe as the very first notes start off. Amy repeatedly takes a deep breath in order to absorb us for an hour. Terry’s guitar part flirts with high notes, as Amy’s voice follows the same tonality path.
Lyrics
It's true, we're all a little insane
But its so clear
Now that I'm unchained

Fear is only in our minds
Taking over all the time
Fear is only in our minds but its taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
You know you live to break me- don't deny
Sweet sacrifice

One day I'm gonna forget your name
And one sweet day, you're gonna drown in my lost pain

Fear is only in our minds
Taking over all the time
Fear is only in our minds but its taking over all the time

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
And oh you love to hate me don't you, honey?
I'm your sacrifice.

[I dream in darkness
I sleep to die
Erase the silence
Erase my life
Our burning ashes
Blacken the day
A world of nothingness
Blow me away]

Do you wonder why you hate?
Are you still too weak to survive your mistakes?

You poor sweet innocent thing
Dry your eyes and testify
You know you live to break me- don't deny
Sweet sacrifice
