One Day the Only Butterflies Left Will Be in Your Chest as You March Towards Your Death is a song featuring Amy Lee from Bring Me the Horizon's EP, POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR, that was released on October 30, 2020.[1] It leaked on October 23, 2020. The collaboration came about after BMTH lifted the melody from Evanescence's Never Go Back, and offered Evanescence a co-writing credit on the song.[2][3][4] Amy Lee was a fan of the band and suggested they collaborate.[2][3]
Amy posted to Twitter after the announcement was made:
I cannot WAIT for this to come out. I love our collab SO much. Honored to be a part of it, the whole album is 🔥 🔥 🔥[5] |
Amy told Revolver that the collaboration with BMTH helped pull her out of a moment where she felt "stuck" while working on Evanescence's fifth album, The Bitter Truth:
I most recently did a collaboration with Bring Me the Horizon that's coming out at the end of the month. I don't really know them personally, we'd just been fans of each other's music, and you know how music is — you feel like you know that person because the music lives in you. So, to be able to plug that in and make it alive and have it be mutual when working together, is something that's really beautiful. While I'd been very busy working on our album, and getting a little bit stuck on some of the words, they sent me this track to work on, and it was such a beautiful escape and release for me. It felt like something I wasn't supposed to do, like my secret little side thing, and it really was just so fulfilling to go back and forth, to collaborate, to have all these conversations everyday with Oli [Sykes, BMTH singer]. It felt beautiful to finish something. It was the boost and the inspiration to take the Evanescence music with a new satisfaction and fuel, where I'd just been frustrated before. I've been so grateful to have the job that I have this year, because music gives me the space to focus on my emotions and be vulnerable and honest and face my fears. It's been the therapy that I really, really, really need right now.[6] |
She further revealed the process took a week for her, and the experience was quite unique as Bring Me the Horizon are located in the U.K. She and Oli Sykes guided each other vocally over the phone as they discussed their idea for what they wanted it to sound like, and the time difference allowed for feedback to be traded fairly quickly.
It was just a really fun escape from that little stuck moment that I was in, and it inspired me. It helped me feel, I don't know... beautiful. The song is beautiful. That song is always gonna have a special place in my heart because I felt like, in a moment as an artist when I was stuck, another artist came along and helped me.[7] |
Oliver explained the song meaning in an interview with NME:
“The idea of that song is that I’m mankind, Amy is Mother Nature and it felt like the perfect thing to have the mother of rock singing it. It’s saying, ‘This is the end of our world, so we need to try and find a new one’. [‘Survival Horror’] ends in a hopeful way. We hope that it will make people want to do something.”[8] |

Lyrics
On the verge of no return, why'd you keep fucking it up?
Don't wanna have to bury you, but nothing seems to get through your skull
One day the only butterflies left will be in your chest
As you march towards your death, breathing your last breath
I hate to say "I told you so", but look how the bruises show
Tell me, how is it gonna feel without my arms wrapped around, wrapped around you?
Bet it feels pretty real when your skin starts to peel from the bone
You were dead to the world, now I'm dead to you
Haunting your own house, nothing to lose
How did I let you sink your fangs so deep? Ah
You know you can't breathe on your own
Past the point of rescuing, why'd I keep pushing my luck?
The hole I wore into your soul has got too big to overlook
One day the only butterflies left will be in our chests
As we march towards our death, breathing our last breath
I thought we had a future, but we ain't got a chance in hell
So tell me, how is it gonna feel without my arms wrapped around, wrapped around you?
Bet it feels pretty real when your skin starts to peel from the bone
You were dead to the world, now I'm dead to you
Haunting your own house, nothing to lose
I let you sink your fangs so deep, ah
You know I can't breathe on my own (You know you can't breathe on your own)
How can I breathe on my own? (How can you breathe on your own?)
The sun is setting on our love, I fear
Letting our loneliness out into the atmosphere
The tide is turning on our chance to turn it 'round
I never thought I'd see my fingernails fall out
Love isn't in the air
Love isn't in the air
Love isn't in the air
Love isn't in the air
