This song was born from a drum loop and harp. When we went into the studio to record the self-titled album, the song had sped up considerably, and with all the guitars and drums in it we decided that the harp wouldn't be able to stand out enough against then as much as a piano would, so the part was converted to piano. One of the major differences in this version is we abandoned the piano completely until last choruses. We return the song to its origin on the harp in the section following the bridge and then marry it to piano till the end.

Questa canzone è nata da un loop di batteria e all'arpa. Quando siamo andati in studio per registrare il terzo omonimo album, la canzone è stata considerevolmente velocizzata, e con tutto le chitarre e le percussioni in essa abbiamo deciso che l'arpa non sarebbe stata in grado di risaltare abbastanza contro di loro tanto quanto varrebbe fatto il piano, così la parte è stata convertita al piano. Una delle maggiori differenze in questa versione è che l'aver abbandonato il piano completamente sino agli ultimi ritornelli. Abbiamo riportato la canzone alle sue origini all'arpa nella parte che segue il bridge per poi sposarsi con il piano fino alla fine della canzone.

Questa è una delle prime canzoni concepite all'interno del progetto "Evanescence". È diventata un inno per la nostra unificata rovina, e una pietra miliare della nostra storia. Like the reminiscence of Whisper in the Overture, this piece begins with slowly evolving memories of songs that didn't make their way onto Synthesis in full. (See of you can guess which.) The repeated note in the low register of the piano that begins in the second half of the piece goes from being on the downbeat, to the upbeat when the melody jumps in between the notes, and becomes the dominant part, defining the repeated note as the pedal point. So the title of the piece refers not only to the fact that it is an instrumental that comes in between two songs, but also that the melody lives, somewhat unexpectedly, in between those repeated notes.

Come le reminiscenze di Whisper presenti nell'Overture, questo pezzo incomincia con un lento evolvere di memorie di canzoni che non hanno avuto piena presenza in Synthesis. (Vedete voi se riuscite a capire quali). La nota ripetuta nel registro grave del piano, che incomincia nella seconda parte del pezzo, va da un tempo lento ad uno veloce; nel mentre la melodia che salta in mezzo alle note, e diventa la parte dominante, va a connotare la nota ripetuta come il pedale del pezzo. Perciò il titolo di questa canzone si riferisce non soltanto al fatto che sia una traccia strumentale che fa da ponte a due canzoni, ma anche al fatto che la melodia viva, piuttosto inaspettatamente, tra quelle note ripetute.

We realize it's quite unusual to have the fisrt single as the last song, but if you look at Synthesis as a whole, it is our story: From the beginning f our origin through both dark and beautiful hours, to what we have become. From the tiniest flicker of hope in our most painful and isolated moments, to the overflow of over we find when we finally reach each other: Imperfection is our soundtrack song to the story of Evanescence thus far, may it bring home this recurring truth: We are broken, but we are not alone. Sometimes it can be hard not to feel like the world is falling apart all around us. We're not numb to the pain we feed it. We even see the beauty in it. life is pain and love and beauty and loss and so much more... We have to feel it to live it and it's worth it. Don't give into the fear. Never stop fighting, never give up hope, loss is worth fighting for.
