With the release of [[Anywhere But Home]], the bonus track, Missing, was released internationally to radio stations for airplay and not released for public sale (though it quickly found its way on eBay). The single had elaborate artwork that made the disc highly collectable. It is rumored that only a few thousand of them exist.

Internationally, two instances of the single exist. Both items (below) were scanned using the exact same equipment and are un-edited:

General information

Written by A. Lee, B. Moody and D. Hodges

Missing is an outtake from Evanescence's debut album, Fallen. It was recorded during the 2001-2002 demo sessions and was included as a b-side on the Australian "Bring Me to Life" commercial single. It was later released on the CD portion of Anywhere but Home (the track can also be heard during the ending credits of the live performance). Missing was also released internationally as a radio single in 2004.

When asked by a fan about the song meaning in an interview with VampireFreaks in early 2012, Amy noted that although the song was open to individual interpretation, the song for her personally was about running away.

Vin1.jpg As far as if she got it right, I would say you always get it right. When it comes to music and art it’s always about how each individual interprets it. Some of our songs are self reflective but some of them are also story telling. For me that song was all about running away, but it's poetry so please do take from it what you can.[1] Vin2.jpg

According to Exodus Evanescence, this is the explanation behind the layers of vocals in Missing:

Vin1.jpg Throughout the verses there is a looped background vocal of Amy whispering "can you stop the fire? please.. please.. please.." and "you can't stop the fire" on the LEFT audio channel plus "can you stand to fight her" and "you won't say the words" on the RIGHT audio channel. But on the later version of the song there is only "please... please..." on the LEFT audio channel and all the other lines on the RIGHT audio channel. Vin2.jpg

The background vocals also appear in the end of the live version of Exodus that was performed at Vino's Bar in Little Rock on May 7, 1999.

The band added Missing to the setlist of the last leg of The Open Door Tour during October to December 2007.[2][3] It was later played at Evanescence's secret New York gig on November 4, 2009.[4][5]

Lyrics

Fallen outtake

Left audio channel: Please, please, please
Right audio channel: Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her? You can't stop the fire. You won't say the words

Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
Maybe someday you'll look up
And barely conscious you'll say to no one
Isn't something missing?

You won't cry for my absence, I know
You forgot me long ago
Am I that unimportant?
Am I so insignificant?
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't someone missing me?

Left audio channel: Please, please, please
Right audio channel: Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her? You can't stop the fire. You won't say the words

Please, please forgive me
But I won't be home again
I know what you do to yourself
I breathe deep and cry out
Isn't something missing?
Isn't someone missing me?

Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't someone missing me?

And if I bleed, I'll bleed
Knowing you don't care
And if I sleep just to dream of you
I'll wake without you there
Isn't something missing?
Isn't something...

Even though I'm the sacrifice
You won't try for me, not now
Though I'd die to know you love me
I'm all alone
Isn't something missing me?
Isn't someone missing me?

Left audio channel: Please, please, please
Right audio channel: Can you stop the fire? Can you stand to fight her? You can't stop the fire. You won't say the words
Please
