Sanctuary is the sixth studio album by Evanescence, which is scheduled to be released on June 5, 2026 through BMG.
Amy Lee shares, "This album is over three years in the making, and finally listening back to it all at once, about to release it to the world, I am so damn proud of every second of it. It’s overwhelming. Working on it has been my outlet for so much that feels wrong and out of control, and a place to ignite hope through the power of music and connection… good thing we have the tour all lined up or I wouldn’t know what to do with myself now! I’ve been completely obsessed. I’m dying for the fans to hear this."[1][2]
Background
In an interview with Revolver published on August 12, 2022, Amy Lee mentioned that the band have begun to get the "itch" to work on new music.
We're in that mode right now where it feels like it's time to do something. I don't know if any of us are ready to look at it like committing to doing a full new album yet, it's a little soon for that. But we need to just start playing around and getting creative. We're at that place. The itch is itching so the scratching comes next.[3]
In separate interviews in November 2022, Amy said that thoughts and inspiration has begun for new music, and the band will slow down the live shows at the end of 2023 to start getting creative.[4][5]
I try not to make too many concrete plans – it just happens. When you sit at the piano and just let it happen. But yeah, I want to make new music with this cool new energy we have with the band.[6]
In an interview at Rock in Rio Lisboa 2024, Amy confirmed that the band were actively writing new music.[7] In an interview at Rock in Rio 2024 in Brazil in September, Amy confirmed the band would go into the studio in November for the first round of recordings.[8]
In an interview at the backstage of Aftershock on October 14, 2024, Amy commented the new music sounded "killer", and they would go for a recording session in November.[9]
Amy stated in an interview on March 24, 2025 that the band was "working on a lot of songs for the new album".[10] She said that there are unfinished songs in the writing process that are being worked on at the same time.[11]
On May 15, 2025, Will Hunt mentioned that three or four songs were worked on with Nick Raskulinecz around November 2024. He added, "Aside from those, we already have three more songs recorded and a few others in progress. I don’t wanna say we’re halfway done with the record just yet, but we’re getting close. As far as release dates go, we don’t have anything specific yet. I’d love to think it would come out this year, but I don’t know if that’ll happen—it’ll probably be sometime early next year."[12]
In a radio interview on June 19, 2025, Amy stated that they will release songs throughout the year, whether they are from the album or side projects. The full album will "probably" be released in early 2026.[13]
During the video premiere of Fight Like a Girl on July 7, Amy confirmed that they will be working with multiple producers for the album, and that they will aim to start releasing singles sometime in 2025. In an interview with Variety, Amy said that three songs were almost finished and quite a few more needed to be recorded, which would be done in August.[14]
In an interview with Euphoria on August 21, 2025, Amy confirmed that the new material would build on the band’s recent sound with a few surprises. Before the interview, she said she listened to some rough mixes of a "handful of songs that [they're] finishing up" and said that she felt like she was in a place that she knew who she was and what she loved about this music.
I have a new spark where I’m able to see it all from here, all the way to the beginning, in a new perspective that is helping me to move forward, but also marry the timeline. We’re reaching all the way back and pulling that all the way into the future at the same time with the perspective of the life that I’ve lived and the things that we’ve been through and also acceptance of things that I couldn’t accept back then because I was a teenager and so much more.[15]
In addition, Amy said that the new music was unique, with each song having its own life and standing worlds apart from the next. She said she was aiming to create a record "with chapters, variety and different colors."
In September, Amy said that they were "more than halfway" done with the album. While a final tracklist hasn’t been confirmed as of then, she said, “I think we have all the songs that are gonna be on it at least started, so we’re in that moment of finessing and beautifying and writing lyrics and doing the hard stuff where I slam my head up against the wall.”[16] Later in the month, she said, "we're really kind of rounding the corner. We have a lot of songs in progress and we're looking to release our new album at the beginning of next year."[17] By "beginning," she meant early 2026, not January.[17]
Amy said in December that the new album was "this massive body of work that we’ve been working on for a couple of years now. A lot of it’s recorded, some of it’s done, and there’s lyrics left on a lot of songs where I have to find that perfect thing to say." She confirmed that it would be released in early 2026, though a specific release date has not yet been set. She added that she had to finish writing the lyrics and the recording of the vocals, but that they were "very close" to finishing.[18]
During a radio interview on December 13, the interviewer speculated that the album might be released in spring 2026. Amy Lee responded: "Yeah, let's say that. [I have a] few more lyrics to write, but it's going very well and I'm really excited about it."[19]
In an interview with Will Hunt on February 13, 2026, he revealed that Evanescence has done 4 songs with Nick Raskulinecz and 6-7 songs with Jordan Fish and Zakk Cervini, with Zakk mixing the entire album.[20]
Recording Process & In the Studio
In November 2024, the band entered the studio to work on the album.[8]
On July 17, 2025, Evanescence shared a picture of Amy Lee recording vocals on their Instagram story.
On March 21, 2026, Evanescence shared some photos and video clips on their Instagram stories in the studio recording new music with Jordan Fish and Zakk Cervini. A notebook can be seen in the corner showing the title Self-Destruct, which could reference a new song title.
On March 29, the band shared more behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram stories of a string recording session in Los Angeles with their longtime collaborator, cellist Dave Eggar, composer Michael Wandmacher, and conductor Susie Bench.[21]
In an interview with Audacy on April 10, Amy explained that the band had a "huge creative burst" thanks to the collaboration with three different producers.[22]
Title and concept
Amy explained that the album is called Sanctuary because it is “a sanctuary, not an escape from this chaotic, surreal, violent time, but escape from the lies, saying that we're not living in that crazy time.”[22] She added:
“It is a sanctuary of truth and community,” she adds. “Moving from the song to album, I just feel like this music is a sanctuary for me. It has been. It is every time, you know, last time we made an album, it was the pandemic hitting all around us at the same time and kind of wondering what's next and how do we go on tour and will things ever be normal again. I think when we're in these big, in my life, powerful and painful and difficult moments, and also in the outside world going through these wild moments where we feel like we don't have control and things are slipping through our fingers, the music is a place for me to be able to say anything. No censorship, no holding back. Nobody's telling me I can't, anything. It's our world, and it just feels so beautiful also to give somebody else something that gives them joy.”[22]
Release
The album will be available in several formats: digital album, standard CD, deluxe CD, and limited-edition box set. A double vinyl of the album will be released on September 4, 2026.[23][1]
The Japanese editions of the album, which also arrive on June 5, include bonus material. The two-disc standard edition includes "Fight Like a Girl" and a solo version of "Forever Without You." The latter is a Japanese bonus track only. The two-disc limited deluxe edition includes the same bonus tracks as the standard edition, plus a Blu-ray with 72 minutes of live footage from the November 30, 2022 Worlds Collide performance in Amsterdam.
Singles
"Afterlife" was released on March 28, 2025 to promote the Netflix animated series, Devil May Cry. The first single in anticipation of the album, "Who Will You Follow", was released on April 10, 2026.[24][1]
