General Information

Written by: John Lennon and Paul McCartney

Across the Universe is a song recorded by the Beatles. It was written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon–McCartney. The song first appeared on the various artists' charity compilation album No One's Gonna Change Our World in December 1969, and later, in different form, on Let It Be, the group's final released album.

Evanescence covered the song during their Summer 2018 Synthesis Live tour. The song was most likely added to the setlist in tribute to Amy Lee's late brother, Robby Lee, as he was a huge fan of the Beatles and passed away at the beginning of 2018. Watch the band's performance of the song here.

The band recorded a studio version while they had an orchestra assembled for The Chain at Ocean Way Nashville in late 2019.[1] This version was exclusively released on the bonus CD A Live Session From Rock Falcon Studio from the band's fifth album, The Bitter Truth.

The cover song was digitally released to purchase and stream on December 17, 2021, as it was only made available on a bonus CD of the deluxe box set of The Bitter Truth. The single cover art is a painting by Tim Cantor.[2] Said painting appeared on the music video of Wasted on You.

After the release, Amy posted the following on her Facebook page:[3]

Vin1.jpg Performing Across the Universe became my favorite part of the night when we were touring Synthesis. Every word speaks straight to my soul and singing it feels so good. Like my spirit lifts out of my body. And I feel the presence of the ones I’ve lost, especially my brother. Robby was a massive fan of The Beatles and this cover was for him. “Nothing’s gonna change my world” to me, means nothing can tear us apart. Ever. Not even death. Because real love is forever. Listening to the recording now brings me right back to that beautiful feeling and it makes me very happy to see you enjoying it too.

This beautiful artwork by Tim Cantor hangs in my house. From the moment I saw it I connected with it in a spiritual way. Out of the thorns grows this beautiful tree, reaching up toward the light with everything in it’s being till it’s petals defy gravity towards heaven. Just like I feel the song moving me. I was shocked when I asked for permission to use the artwork and was told the artist was an Evanescence fan, who had been moved by my work too, and was more than happy to let us use it for this release. Love connects us all, if we let it.

Sending mine out to all of you!

Lyrics

Evanescence Version

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind
Inside a letter box they tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life are ringing
Through my open ears inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns
And calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
