General information

I Will Follow You into the Dark is a song originally by Death Cab For Cutie that Amy Lee covered as part of Loudwire's series where rock musicians play songs using children's instruments. For this episode, Amy used a Hello Kitty keyboard.

The video of Amy's cover was uploaded to Loudwire's YouTube channel on November 1, 2016[1].

Two months prior to the performance being published, Amy had mentioned in a Reddit AMA thread, whilst promoting her children's album Dream Too Much, that she couldn't get the original song out of her head and was working on the chord progression on the piano.

Vin1.jpg Today I can't get "I will follow you into the dark" out of my head so I was just actually sitting here picking the chord progression out on the keyboard before we started this. :)[2] Vin2.jpg

On January 4, 2017, Loudwire announced that the keyboard will be autographed by Amy and auctioned for charity on eBay. At her request, the proceeds from the winning bid will go to the Epilepsy Foundation.[3] Amy has been passionate about this charity for years. Back in 2005, Amy created her own project called Out of the Shadows with the Epilepsy Foundation to raise awareness of the condition, as her brother had epilepsy himself.

The bidding ended on January 14, 2017, with the keyboard reaching 52 bids and was sold for $1,775.00 USD.

Lyrics

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the 'No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
I held my tongue as she told me,
"Son, fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the 'No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the 'No's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Video

Amy Lee performing I Will Follow You into the Dark.

Loudwire uploaded Amy's live cover on their YouTube channel on November 1, 2016. Amy lights a candle next to her and plays the Hello Kitty keyboard as she sings the song. Once she's finished performing, she blows out the candle and the video ends.
